Tree trimming and pruning in Columbus
Deadwood, roof clearance and limbs over the drive.
Trimming is the work that keeps a tree instead of losing it: dead limbs out of the crown, branches lifted off a roof or a driveway, a split leader taken back before a storm finishes the job. The price depends on height and species, and anything near a power line changes who does what.

Lines and the utility
Georgia Power's FAQ says the trimming it does around its own lines is done by professional tree contractors following ANSI and ISA pruning standards, that it tries to notify owners in person or with a door hanger first, and that there is no fixed schedule. It also says no one should climb trees in the vicinity of power lines. If your tree is in the utility's lines, ask the utility first. Trimming the rest of the tree is a private job.
City trees
Columbus's 2002 tree ordinance prohibits topping any City tree for any purpose and requires a City Arborist permit for cutting city trees. The Urban Forestry and Right-of-Way division prunes right-of-way trees itself, it says, to keep them healthy and reduce storm damage. Requests go through 311. See tree rules.
Before you call
- Say what you want gone: deadwood, roof clearance, a limb over the drive, or a lighter crown.
- Count the trees, since many contractors price by the tree.
- Note any wires running through or beside the canopy.
