A small seat that's growing
Hamilton was founded in 1827 as the seat of the newly formed Harris County, incorporated as a town in 1828 and as a city in 1903, and is named for Paul Hamilton, a former U.S. Secretary of the Navy and governor of South Carolina. U.S. 27 and State Route 116 run through it. Its population grew from 1,016 in 2010 to 1,680 in 2020.
Cataula
South of Hamilton on U.S. 27, Cataula is a census-designated place first listed in 2020, with 1,433 residents, about 16 miles by road from Columbus. Its name comes from a Muscogee word, kitali, translated as "withered mulberry"; Cataula Creek flows into nearby Mulberry Creek. State Route 315, the road the 2019 tornado paralleled at EF2 strength in Harris County, meets U.S. 27 there.
Which rules apply
Columbus's tree ordinance and Tree for Fee pickup don't reach Harris County. Ask the City of Hamilton or Harris County about tree rules and debris. Georgia 811 applies statewide, so stump grinding still needs a ticket. See stump grinding.
Nearby, requests also come in from Midland, Fortson, Phenix City, AL, and from Columbus itself. See every area.
